For this week on Project Quilting we were asked to create a work based off a song title. I knew immediately that I wanted to work on this quilt for my family. I've envisioned this quilt for several months and just haven't had the time to dedicate to it. My song inspiration was "Modern Cowboy" by Tesla and I was also inspired by my family.

I wish I could photograph this piece in a way that does it justice. There are a number of painted layers with thread painting as well.

I can't wait to hang it in our bedroom. I know my Cowboy's life is nothing like he envisioned, but more importantly, I know he loves it with every bit of his heart..

Sorry for the quiet on my end - just a crazy week. I finally thought I had a breather, but upon looking at my calendar..I don't. I have Moda & Riley Blake patterns to do next week. Back to the sewing machine for me, but that means more fun & free patterns for you!

Luckily I already have projects in mind and I'm not stressed about the design. I never know when a dry run will strike. It weighs on me because it's crucial to always be thinking of the next project.

For this reason, I was thrilled when a friend of mine, Ebony Love, asked me to try a new inspirational quilt product for her. They are called Quiltspirations! It is an awesome card pack of the best prompts to help you try something new. I think they would make a perfect gift for a quilting friend - I would love to pair it with some fabric and a rotary blade.

In my last Project Quilting project, I used a few prompts to mix it up a bit.
*I tried the Pantone color of the year.. I used both 2011 (Honeysuckle) and 2012 (Tangerine)
I loved the warmness that the colors gave the quilt.
*And I nixed my neutral! After I submitted the quilt, I wasn't happy with the binding (always my Achilles' heal). I tossed the neutral binding and redid it with bright yellow...loving it..

Loved working these into my quilt! I can't wait to pick them up again soon. So many great ideas - I highly recommend you take a look at the site as there are lots of fun freebies too.

Where Does Inspiration Come From

There are times when I'm flooded with ideas. They always seem to hit me at inopportune times..like when I'm trying to fall asleep, driving Kiddo to school, or in the shower. And there are plenty of times when trying to think of something new and creative is painful and my brain stalls. What do I do? I look for creative prompts and try to work past it.

I'm so glad Project Quilting is back in full swing. Kim has worked at hard at creating an atmosphere that is welcoming and encouraging. The week long challenge is never long enough for me to complete what I envision, BUT it gives me incredible inspiration and a safe place to try something new. Whether you are a novice or experienced, modern or traditional, you have to give it a try.

This week the challenge was to be inspired by architecture. I had a number of ideas, but they always ended up being too literal. The week was coming to an end and I had nothing to show for it. On the way to Kiddo's school I was listening to The Muppets soundtrack and racking my brain. This started a very long train of thought..

..The Muppets.. "The Muppets Take Manhattan" movie..famous New York buildings..

The Empire State Building... "Sleepless in Seattle" and the Empire lit up with a heart for Valentine's Day..

Valentine's Day.. love.. so in love my with my husband.. haven't painted much since I fell in love with my Hubby...miss painting.. favorite artist Van Gogh..favorite painting "Starry Night"...

Does everyone's else brain work in such crazy ways?

So.. what I came up with is to take a spin on "Starry Night".. something romantic and something that focuses on the beauty of architecture instead of nature.

I wanted to try a few new techniques as well. I had recently read about an alternate to using fusible when working with appliques. The main idea is to over saturate the fabric with starch and lots of hot ironing. It worked great - really cut down on fraying with raw edge applique, considerably cheaper, and pretty quick.

Here is a picture of where I started with the simple appliques..

And then I decided that I wanted to play with painting on fabric. It would be crazy to try a Van Gogh and not have any actual painting.I worked with both fabric paints and acrylic paints mixed with a textile medium. I have lots and lots..and lots to learn. BUT I had soo much fun and will do it more in the future.

Then it was time for lots of free motion quilting. Some with colored thread, some with different colored bobbin thread, some monofilament.. You can't learn if you don't take risks and put yourself out there.

And here is my completed quilt. I love the warmth and love that emanates from this piece. It just makes me happy to look at and it made me happy to make. In my opinion, quilting should be a release and not a source of stress.

I have a love/hate relationship with the heart.I feel it's distracting,but it was the source of inspiration and it felt necessary to keep. I hope Van Gogh isn't turning in his grave.. hope he would enjoy a more romantic take on his breathtaking work..

No Woman Is An Island

No woman is an island though, and that article was a collaboration with two other amazing women! Kerrie More interviewed me and authored the article. She was also at The Creative Connection last year and I'm so sad I didn't get a chance to chat with her in person. As she interviewed me, we discovered we had a fair amount in common. She's also a librarian and lives in Montana (where Hubby & I honeymooned and dream of one day living). Kerrie is also pretty crafty herself! Children's Relief Nursery

This year I will be participating in the Children's Relief Nursery based out of Portland, Oregon. I am donating my Piecing History Together art quilt. Here is a little bit of information about the organization in their own words:

"For the 11th year in a row, Children's Relief Nursery will be hosting Portland's Original Iron Chef on April 20, 2012 at the Portland Art Museum. Our most significant fundraising event, proceeds from Iron Chef helped keep hundreds of Portland's most vulnerable children safe last year.

Did you know that every eight minutes there is a report of child abuse or neglect in Oregon and nearly half of the victims are infants and toddlers? We focus our work on early intervention, because the best solution is to prevent abuse and neglect from happening in the first place.

Our mission is to keep children safe and families strong. Our vision is to prevent child abuse and neglect, because all kids deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential. Our early childhood program builds successful and resilient children and preserves families. We work with at-risk families with children from birth through four because early intervention in the first years of life substantially affects a child's future. In our first year, we served 58 children. In just a decade, our program has grown to serve more than 250 children annually."

As a mother, helping children lead safe and happy lives is a cause I'm in great favor of.

Soldering Surprises!

I'm not big on New Year resolutions. I believe that life can change on a whim for good or bad, and it's up to us to work daily on becoming a better version of ourselves. And I have to admit that 2012 so far is kinda kicking me in the pants. But all is not lost, I believe I have turned a corner and am back with all engines blazing!

While not a fan of resolutions, I do like to set goals. This year I plan on learning how to screenprint - we won't talk about how looooong I have had all the equipment and that it is all still fresh in the cellophane packaging. I also wanted to learn, or should I say relearn, how to solder. I tried it once before Kiddo was born (almost 4 years ago!) and then quickly tucked it away. When I had tried it, I'm pretty sure I tackled it with no instruction and was completely dissatisfied with clumpy mess I had made. Lucky for me, I recently met Lauri Grimshaw-Cox, an accomplished artist & teacher.. and lives super close to me! When I saw her Soldering 101 Class go on sale, I knew it was a sign to try it again.

There is goofy ol' me! I had an amazing time - I learned fabulous tips and really was pleased with my final pieces. I made a double sided charm for a dear friend and the soldered glass bauble is for me.

That is what I took home with me last night and I spent this afternoon finalizing my gift.

There it is - a long silver necklace with a Cinderella pearl dangle. I love it.. I really hope my friend does too.

Here is a close up of the loveliness. I added even more glam today! I goofed a bit on the corner of the glass and figured glitter just makes everything better. I used Stickles glitter glue and topped it with German glass glitter.

A sweet surprise for an amazing family friend that could sure use some spoiling these days. And lucky for me she doesn't read the blog, but we love her anyway ;o)

I triple dog dare you to go try a new craft or give one that horribly wrong a second chance. And I absolutely recommend that if you live in Utah, you simply must take one of Lauri's classes. She is a great teacher and completely enthusiastic about helping you enjoy the process of learning.

Chocolate Kisses

I love rag quilts. They are so fluffy and only get more cuddly after each wash. The only thing I don't love about rag quilts..is cutting them!

Don't you agree? Well if you do agree and you're in Utah, you are in luck! Early this year at Thimbles & Threads I will be teaching this Valentine baby rag quilt and the best part? I will have all the fabric & batting precut & fringed for you! Yup! You get to come to class and enjoy the best part of quilting - the quilting! I alternated between traditional X's and free motioned hearts, but you can do whatever you like.

Now, I have the same fabric on the back - I personally love this look. It's like a whole new patchwork blanket on the back.

MaryJane's Farm Magazine - Artist Feature

It's hard for me to keep secrets.. like super hard. So when good things happen and I have to keep it under wraps, I typically let little bits slip out before I can. As you may have guessed from previous posts and/or my Facebook chatter, I am in a magazine this month.

I was interviewed for MaryJane's Farm magazine about a new line of items that I will be offering in my Etsy store. I am creating DIY paper pieced fabric card kits that are perfect for the new quilter. They are small and not intimidating to create, but for the very lucky receiver they are mini works of art to be cherished. I love quilts - the love & the time that goes in to them. How wonderful would it be to receive a mini bit of love in the mail?

For those that don't want to quilt, but want to enjoy this textile loveliness - I am offering quilted cards made by me.. Now the real question will be, do you keep it or give it away?

The ABC's of Paper Piece Quilting

I'm so excited about one of my new classes at Thimbles & Threads. I will have a year long class of paper piecing the alphabet. This would be an amazing baby or children's quilt for next Christmas. It will be scrappy, bright, and just so very cheerful. You will become a paper piecing pro by the time this beauty is completed!

Merry Christmas! I hope you had a wonderful holiday. We had so much fun watching our children's excitement and awe. I didn't make as many gifts this year as I would have liked, but I did have time to make everyone an ornament. I can't not believe how expensive they have become and I wanted something a little more personal. I've had a collection of polymer clay in my studio just waiting for some fun. It was a great experience to work in a new medium. I'm not sure if I can find a way to incorporate clay into my projects, but I'm looking!

Here are my first projects..

A pink Santa bear for Baby.

She is insanely in love with teddy bears right now.

An Ariel Mermaid for kiddo.

This one I did without a tutorial.

Loved how it turned out ( though she is bustier than I planned..lol)

And this year was all about Star Wars for my husband -

from the Blu Ray collection to a 2012 calendar.

I made him a Rebel Alliance ornament.

Ribbon Candy Tree Skirt - Tutorial for Moda Bakeshop

I'm so excited to present my next pattern for Moda's Bakeshop! "The Ribbon Candy" tree skirt is beyond easy to make and it makes such a powerful impact. Seriously, my husband wet his pants over this..and well that's saying something in this house!

I did use my serger and ruffler foot, but I provide tips on how to work around those accessories if you don't have them..but I highly recommend both of those extras! I use them a ton in my studio and they make life lovely..

All you need to make this tree skirt is a Moda Bella Solid Jelly Roll, some felt, and pretty serger thread. You could seriously whip it up tonight!

Oh Fudge...

Oh Fudge.. I know it's been awhile since I posted and welcome to all my new readers! I'm sure we are all busier than normal with all the holidays this month. Whatever you celebrate, I hope you are enjoying this special time of the year.

Have no fear, I have been quilting & designing.. just nothing I can show right now.. Though I have a SUPER fun Moda Bakeshop post coming on Friday.

In the meantime, I'm busy wrapping gifts, avoiding crowds, and making treats with the Kiddos.

Heaven help me in 10 years...

So much personality in such a little body..and her baby sister is no slouch either. While we were making fudge, Baby was rip roaring around the house in her Cozy Coupe.

Christmas Tree Outing - Art Ornament

The baby didn't nap too well yesterday, so I didn't get as much work done as I had planned. I did however, create this art ornament. I think it's my favorite one so far. We are truck people and have actually have our own big red truck. I will probably make just a few more styles later this week.

The Patchwork Stocking

Prudent Baby hosted a stocking sewing contest this month. I had to enter - I can't blow off a sewing contest with a NEW, awesome serger as the grand prize. I had the toughest time being inspired though. I drew up a ton of designs and none of them really spoke to me. It's hard for me to dedicate time during the holidays to a project that I'm not crazy about. And then it hit me as I was playing with my fabric stash,,

Patchwork stockings are nothing new,but I really hope my take on it is a fun twist. I decided that it would be awesome to create stockings for my daughters that would also be memory keepers of the year. And this year, Isabelle became obsessed with knit, upcycled dresses. After winning one of Soren Lorensen Design's dresses. , she wore it until it was threadbare (and wears it still..). My only option was to make more and I lost count as to how many I made.

This stocking is created with pieces from a few of the dresses I made for her. The only exception is the giant monkey eating a cheeseburger. He was too small to make into a dress, but I kept him around just in case. Well Isa LOVES cheeseburgers (with NO pickles) and monkeys. It's perfect. I also raw edged appliqued an "i" on the foot of the stocking. She learned to identify her written name this year and loves to see her initials. Every detail of this stocking is with her in mind, down to using her favorite color green serger thread.

Not sure yet as to who won the contest, but I'm glad it inspired me to make this stocking. Isabelle was pretty excited to see it and insisted that she immediately hang it over the fireplace. And as a crafty mother, what better present is that?

My Sweet Bumpy Road Pie

Where Women Cook has a call open for “pieographies” – to tell your life story through a pie. My pie? My Sweet Bumpy Road – a yummy spin on a rocky road pie. Rocky road is one of my favorite taste combinations and it is a fitting description for our family.

What is life like while juggling aspirations to be a designer, raising two adorable daughters, and keeping the home fires alive? It is a sweet and chaotic life. Each day is full of laughter, tears, ups and downs. Each day I am thankful for the blessings I have and work hard to keep it all together.

I am awful at balance though it is something I strive for. There are times when I’m convinced that I have mothering down to a science and minutes later I’m pretty sure I’m the meanest mom on the block. I’m not Supermom, but I do try to be my daughters’ hero. I want them to know that even though their mom spends hours of the day working instead of playing with them, I’m working for them. I want them to remember the sweet moments of their childhood. I want them to realize that even though life is not fair, the sweetness outweighs the struggles we face.

Our lives are bumpy and fraught with obstacles, but each and every day I see my children smile and hear them laugh.

Everyday is sweet.

My Sweet Bumpy Road Pie

(2) packages of chocolate pudding/pie filling

2 cups of milk

(1) 8oz. container of Cool Whip

1 cup of mini marshmallows

15 graham cracker squares

1/2 cup pecan pieces

1.) Beat the chocolate pie filling with 2 cups of cold milk for about 2 minutes.

2.) Gently fold in 1 1/2 cups of Cool Whip and 1 cup of mini marshmallows.

3.) Crush the graham cracker squares into the bottom of pie dish.

4.) Fill the pie dish with chocolate pudding mixture.

5.) Swirl the remaining Cool Whip over the pie.

6.) Top the pie with the pecan pies.

7.) Refrigerate for 4-6 hours or overnight.

Christmas Tradition - Silhouette Ornaments

I'm a Disney nut. I grew up in Southern California and spent many birthdays at Disneyland. I love the rides, the movies, the songs. However, it wasn't until I took my first daughter there when she was 9 months old, that I went into the silhouette shop on Main Street. I'm not sure whose idea it was, probably my sweet Mother, but we decided to have a silhouette created each year for my children.

We haven't missed a year and quickly amassed a small bundle of them. This year was my youngest's first trip and of course we had to start this tradition for her too.

My favorite? The silhouette of the girls together.

It is amazing to watch my little munchkins grow through these little images. This year we had enough to decorate their pink Christmas tree.

Was there ever a sweeter tree? I think not..

If you aren't the Disney nut that I am, you can still replicate this tradition. There are a number of artists on Etsy that would be more than happy to create a similar ornament for you.

Christmas Card Planning

Christmas cards are HUGE for me! We don't live near any family and lots of our friends live in other states. For me, Christmas cards is a sweet way to connect with those we love. I typically spend hours deciding on the right clothes for the picture and even more hours deciding on the cards. Last year I came across these new style cards that doubled as ornaments. I love this idea!

This year Tiny Prints has a huge selection of the paper card/ornaments. There are so many in fact that I'm having a tough time deciding on the one for us. Which one do you love?

I think this last one maybe my absolute favorite. I love the sweet angel image and I think my girls would look so sweet on that card.

Peek-A-Boo Pattern Review

Awhile back I did sewing pattern reviews as a regular segment on my blog. My apologies if you miss them, but right now I just have so much going on it's hard to dedicate that time. However, at a blogger party earlier this year I met the fabulous woman behind Naptime Crafters. I found out that she has started a great line of patterns under the name of Peek-A-Boo Patterns. You have to check them out. Very sweet line!

I had the opportunity to test a knit dress pattern for her. You can find her whole line here at You Can Make This - this pattern is the Ashley knit.

Another Toddler Thanksgiving Craft

I tried again to find a "job" to entertain my sweet toddler while I tried to get work done. I found a super cute Thanksgiving fingerpaint project on All Kids Network. Isabelle is crazy about painting and I rarely let her at home - just too much work with her busy hands and the baby. However I'm trying more and more to move out of my comfort zone so that she can learn and enjoy.

I cut the corn and stalks last night. My husband insisted that I cut some green leaves for the cob as well. Husbands are funny, aren't they? But I gave in..

On her own she painted the corn very similar to the original tutorial.

I didn't even instruct on what she should do. Love her orderly pieces of corn.
And then well.. that got boring I guess. We ended up with a crop of muddy corn! She had fun and I got no work done, but we had a great afternoon together while the baby napped.
And I have more cute Thanksgiving decorations. Granted they are muddy brown, but they are made with love!

Turkey Garland

The Baby still insists on 2 naps a day while I'm lucky if I can get Kiddo to be quiet for 1 nap. During the morning nap I try to work while Kiddo plays or reads. The reality is Kiddo wants to hang on my leg and have constant attention. It's hard to balance this. I want Kiddo to feel loved and have that special time with me, but there are some days that I'm so busy that I quite simply need to work. I thought if I had some dedicated crafts for her to do while I worked, that we might both be happier.

Early this morning I searched Pinterest for Thanksgiving inspired child crafts. I found this post on the blog, Chasing Fireflies. I loved it! I thought it would be a great activity for Kiddo and would be super cute as a decoration. I made a pot of coffee and chopped up Kiddo's doodled construction paper in festive colors. Now if you spend some more time punching holes in the "feathers" your Kiddo's life maybe a tad easier, but.. I'm lazy.
During Baby's nap I gave Kiddo the colorful stack of feathers, a skein of yarn I no longer loved, and a yarn needle. Kiddo is around my sewing tools 24/7, so I feel very comfortable with her using a blunt yarn needle. She's 3 1/2. Please use your own judgement with your kids... I showed her a few times how to punch through the paper using the needle and off she went.
Did I get more work done? Probably not. My leg is still the place to cling to no matter what craft is available. However, she did finish a beautiful strand of garland all on her own. It looks awesome and fun in our playroom. And I actually love that the feathers are from doodled paper.. looks more like us..
What was I working on? Well it's top secret, Peeps! But here is a tiny peek..

Forget the Tricks, Give Me the Treats!

We've had such a busy week. Each year it seems that the months October through January fly by at an even faster rate! I've been extremely busy with some exciting work projects, but have been missing that extra quality time with my girls. On a rare quiet day, I was able to take Isabelle with me to enjoy our first spa day together. As you can tell, she was more than a little excited. I think it's safe to say that we've ruined her and all future haircuts will be at the salon!

After having our hair trimmed and styled up, it was time for our pedicures! Isabelle has always been fascinated by painted nails. Here she is getting her legs ready to be pampered.

And we ended up getting super fabulous pedicures - glitter toes! Isabelle's toes are now blue & green with a ton of glittery sparkle. It is perfect to match her mermaid costume for Halloween.
Loved spending this long relaxing morning with my little girl. I hope that our first spa day is a special memory she'll always remember.

This week, I also shipped my Halloween gift to my mother. Much to her surprise, the Glinda shoes were always intended for her mantle and not mine.

I also gave her my Feeling Stitchy free motion embroidery. I fell in love with this design the instant I saw it and knew my mom would love it too.
Last but certainly not least, it is my aunt's 65th birthday this year! And to make it extra special, she is retiring from being a nurse. She is such an amazing woman and I'm so happy she can now spend some time relaxing. I crocheted this prayer shawl for her. It came out a little more "granny" than I had intended, but I know my aunt will love and appreciate it.

Sassy Scoops - Halloween GNO!

Had such a fun time at Sassy Scoop's Halloween night out this week. You can't go wrong with Diet Coke, yummy treats, and costumes - right?!I love meeting other fellow Utah bloggers! In the era of everything online, it's great to connect and unwind.. in person!

On top of the yummy treats and fun games, we learned more about the Jordan Valley Medical Center's new breast care facility. October is breast cancer awareness month and it's soo important to me to honor those that have fought any kind of cancer. Sadly, Utah is one of the lowest in the states for women getting their mammograms. Ladies, protect yourself and your loved ones - get checked & stay healthy!!

On to the fun treats! We had a cake walk and I was quite bummed that I did not win any of the Sweet Tooth Fairy cupcakes. We could try to guess how much candy was in the cutesy jars to win them. Sadly, I left before I found out who won all that yummy candy! I'm so bad at that game, but I just loved this display. My kiddos would go nuts over it! BUT, I did win a costume prize. I wore my over the top pink (in honor of breast cancer awareness) Lil' Bo Peep costume and won for my outstanding pinkness! And I was foiled again - I really wanted some of those Utah Truffles gift baskets, but I was too slow. I did however win a very warm vest that my husband quickly swiped from me..eh, whatever keeps him happy enough to let me out at night, right?

And here are some of the yummy treats those fabulous Sassy Scoops ladies served. The potstickers were SO delish!

I apologize for the lack of costume photos, but let me tell you that there were some fabulous ones! So good that I didn't always recognize my Twitter friends ;o) There was Flo from Progressive, a gumball machine, and the Queen of Hearts. Loved it!

Princess Leia - Crochet Beanie Mini Tutorial

When a dear friend asked if I could create a Princess Leia cap for her baby girl, I jumped at the chance. This hat is adorable, simple, and you can create it during a nap!

First, you will need to crochet a basic beanie in a dark brown hair color. You can use any basic beanie, I used a hdc pattern because I like that stitch.

Next you will cut 36 pieces of yarn cut to one yard. Divide the stack in half - so two sets of 18 pieces. With each set you will create a large braid - 3 sets of 6.

Then gently roll the braid into what kind of looks like a cinnamon roll. Using a yarn needle and another long piece of yarn, sew the bun layers together.

Place the beanie on and decide placement of the braid buns. Sew them on and call it a day!

SOOOOOOOO easy and check out the final results..

Is my friend's baby the *most* adorable Princess Leia ever? You can easily adapt this into any size. I'm considering making myself one for snowboarding season!

The Great Pumpkin

We were so excited this week to have our annual pumpkin patch trip. The ride over to the new patch was a little nerve wracking though. Each kid was melting down, the Hubby was on a sarcasm streak, and my anxiety was starting to run high..but as soon as we all bolted from the van, we had a great time!This new little farm had every pumpkin you could imagine! Isabelle had requested a green pumpkin and I had explained that they don't come in that color..but I was wrong!

Beautiful Cinderella white..
And Isabelle's favorite color, green... and yes we have a green pumpkin on the front porch right now.

They even had some goats eating pumpkins.

I love going to the patch to pick out the pumpkins and getting some fall shots in. Well my kids had other plans.

OK. So I wished I had a "before" shot. You see this pumpkin down here? It had THE most beautiful stem, curvy, long, and incredible. I asked the Hubby to grab it for me as it was the perfect pumpkin for me. And he grabbed it by the beautiful delicate stem.. Humph.. That's the "after" shot..

SLC Modern Quilt Guild

I'm not sure how long I've been a member of the SLC Modern Quilt Guild, but I do know that I've never, ever been able to attend. Between the Hubby's schedule and my kiddos, it just never worked out. I decided that this had to be a priority. Luckily even though it's been a rough, sick Baby week, my husband *gets* that yes this is fun, but it's also work related.. So I finally attended and will hopefully be at all the future gatherings as well.

Last night we had a demonstration of diamonds..

I've never considered a diamond based project before, but I was super excited to go home and try one.

The lighting & my camera were not getting along, but let me tell you that this argyle quilt was nothing short of AMAZING! I love this look for a quilt to give a man.. Hmm... Wonder if my Pops likes argyle.. The quilt was made by Kati of From The Blue Chair.
What a warm, welcoming guild! I had so much fun and took home quite a few goodies thanks to the ladies of The Sewing Summit..

Hooked on The Quilted Fish

This past year when I went to Quilt Market, I was knocked out by The Quilted Fish's booth. I bought a TON of patterns and basically just wanted to move in! I was more than a little thrilled when I found out that Amanda, the brainchild of The Quilted Fish, was in my creative guild. She is sooo sweet and hasn't placed a restraining order on me even though I probably have emailed her more than her own mom. I just adore her designs would *love* to learn from her. THEN I found out she also designed fabric for one of my most favorite companies, Riley Blake. And sure enough, when I checked out my fabric studio I had TONS from her line..

Last night she threw a party launching her new line, Delighted. And yes it is *delightful*! The colors are cheerful and bright. I have tons of ideas and can't wait to get my hands on it! Oh and the party? Shear delight...

I Need TeePee For My...

Grab that itchy roll of TP no one wants to use.. and read on!

What do you need?

*A fresh roll of TP

*A fat quarter of fabric

*Some extra batting, smaller than your fat quarter

*A jumbo twig

What do you do?

You layer it as the image shows above, and ya stuff it all in!

Love my stem? It's a real pumpkin stem! Now before you go to your local pumpkin farm in the middle of night to scalp some stems, here's the deal. Wait till Halloween is over and ask nicely =) You can't even use them yet anyways.. Let them sit out and dry for weeks and weeks. Don't put them airtight in a ziploc unless you want to see a science experiment... Sure, ask me how I know..

And next year you will have these AMAZING stems to craft with.. I'm going to be making a few velvet pumpkins for my Thimbles & Threads class attendees ;o)

Only Bad Witches Are Ugly

It's no secret to friends and blog readers that I'm a tad obsessed with Elphaba, the green faced witch. But I also *love* the musical Wicked.. and Glinda.. and well I guess everything related to OZ.

I'm also a HUGE fan of Halloween! Having a whole day to pretend to be something extraordinary, receiving a pillowcase full of candy, and in general causing a raucous - yup, that's my ideal day! I was supposed to be a Halloween baby too..much to my Mom's dismay. My mom does not care too much for Halloween...but she does love Glinda the Good Witch..

Soo... I decided to sass up a pair of Glinda Witchy Boots! It's paper pieced quilted on wood.. Yup!

Here in Utah, we have an amazing wood craft store called The Wood Connection. They always have amazing wood pieces for the season as well as some fabulous year around staples. If you're in Utah, you have to check them out!

To make these fabulous pumps, you'll first want to draw the outline of the wood block on paper. I had to tape 2 pieces together. And be sure to outline both feet. When you paper piece quilt, your final product is a mirror image.

Paint the sides of the wood that will not be covered in fabric.

Decide on the color scheme of the shoes. And well Glinda is all about the pink & flashy silver!

Draw in the details of how you want to quilt the boot. Keep it SIMPLE - this is not the time to learn how to design paper piece quilting.. Check out my sample - super easy 3 parts. Then paper piece quilt it together. Need some help? Check out my tutorial on paper piece quilting here.

Once those are done, adhere to the boots with a fabric glue like Liquid Stitch. Now it's time to decorate those snazzy shoes.

I apologize that I don't have more in depth photos to share. Baby was up screaming from 9pm -4:30am..and I was brain dead when I finished these. So the details are labeled below..

November Classes

I absolutely love the fall! I love the crisp night air, autumn leaves, and holiday spirit. I'm so excited to show you the November classes I will be holding at the fabulous Thimbles & Threads.

The class will be held on November 9th, from 6-8pm

Rag Time Fun!

I love my toys.

And I really love my sewing toys!

When I learned about the AccuQuilt Studio last year,

I knew I had to have it!

I love quilting, but cutting the fabric is not my favorite thing..

I'm always sooo eager to sew!

I had been enjoying my Studio for several months before I

became an official blogger for AccuQuilt.

And I'm super excited that now I have the chance to do tutorials for you.

I just know that after you see how much it can help you can do,

you're going to want a machine too!

And well.. there just might be a GO! giveaway very soon...

For my first AccuQuilt tutorial, I'm going to go over how to make a fun and easy toddler rag quilt. Want to learn how to make this super snuggly quilt? Of course you do!

What do you need?

* AccuQuilt Studio or GO!

* 5 1/4" die combo

* Cotton fabric for the top (it is impossible to find Halloween flannel!)

* Flannel fabric for the back

Where oh where is the batting? I didn't use it in this blanket. It makes it very light weight and perfect for car rides. I tend to blast hot air in the car during the winter months here in Utah, and I wanted a blanket that would be comfy but not too heavy. You of course can use batting if you wish. And have no fear, that batting die is not going to waste. I have another raggy quilt tutorial in the works that uses only the batting die....

OK, so this quilt took a total of 49 (5 1/4") squares. After it is completed, the final size was close to 25". Why the 15" + loss of material? You will be sewing a 1" seam allowance to accommodate the ample fringe that the die cuts for you.

When I cut my fabric with the Studio, I rotary cut my fabric into 6" long strips. I then layer 8 -10 of strips on top of the Studio die and run it through. Super quick!!! No more itty bitty fringe cutting! **Now it does make a ton of lint, so have a lint roller handy..

After all your squares are cut, you will want to match a cotton top with a flannel back, pin them wrong sides together. Then you will sew a X through each square - you want to sew from corner to corner. And remember to backstitch at the start and end of each X. You can absolutely chain stitch these, it will make this quilt go by even quicker!

Once the squares are sewn, clip the threads and start to play with your quilt placement. Honestly I worked on this scheme all day. I even enlisted the help of my parents, eldest daughter, and hubby. I wanted to do a chevron theme, but it just didn't play well with this style of quilt. I ended up with a traditional pattern, but I do love it. The skull fabric helps modernize the look of it!
After you find a quilt motif that you are happy with, you can finish up your quilt. Carefully match up the seams, flannel sides together, and sew 1" seam. When you have completed sewing the rows together, you will then topstitch a 1" seam allowance around the quilt.

Now I read that it would be best to wash it at a commercial laundry mat, but I'm WAY too impatient for that and did it at home. It was totally fine and came out beautiful. I washed it with a baby detergent and used 3-4 dryer sheets to really soften it up.
Here is the final, raggy, soft blankey! Now the only problem is I have 1 snuggly quilt and 2 little girls that want to snuggle up in it! Time to make another one...

Julie's Circus!

For awhile now I've planned on doing a circus for Julie's first birthday. And lucky me, it was a popular theme this year! There was tons of eye candy on Pinterest . I had way more ideas than time or money, but I did my best to make it a blast for the girls.

I won't even start about the heartbreak about my last baby turning 1, I'll just show you the fun we had! I'm pretty sure I did the party - decor,games, food, etc for under $200. I know for some that is a lot to spend, but parties are big in this house! We had over 30 people attend (almost half of which were toddlers and babies). I fully intended to throw everyone out in the back yard, but October weather in Utah is a fickle mistress. Of course after hours of preparation in the back, the clouds and wind were too much.. So with less than an hour before our first guest would arrive, we moved most of it inside. Nothing went as planned and I forgot tons of stuff, but it was perfect!

Easy peasy wreath for under $5.00!

I have loved The Silly Pearl's for sometime now and wanted to try a version of it.

It took a large hoop, 1 bag of party blowers, and some party hats.

And I hotglued it all in bed... tired and crafty, that was me..

The "prizes" came from Oriental Trading Company.

Lots of little knicky knac toys that you would find at a circus..

My mom (and Isabelle) really wanted cotton candy for the party,

but the machine rental was $45!

Instead we bought bags and bags and bags of it at the store.

Huge hit and 1/4 of the cost!!

There is cutie pie Big Sis helping to decorate.

Lots and lots of colorful streamers.

Get them at the dollar store and you can afford the rainbow!

Our house was covered in circus tickets, gumballs, and suckers.

The giant suckers were a great decoration and each child left with one.

Hire a clown?

With a dozen kiddlets, that's all the clown action you need!

Each child received a top hat, clown nose, huge glasses,

package of mustaches, and treat bag.

Most of the goodies again came from Oriental Trading Company.

There are the sweet little treat bags - stuffed with circus cookies,of course!

A great way to coordinate your party on a budget is to use printables.

I bought a circus printable package from JudiBDesigns on Etsy.

A smokin' deal for $10!

It was the invitation, graphics for the favor bag,

graphics for the drinks and snacks, and the thank you note on the way.

And there's Isa with Grammy!

You can't have a circus party without peanuts!

I used the printables again to complete the fun look.

The paper straws were a splurge, but aren't they adorable?

I made a sherbet/7up punch that was a hit with the kiddos.

And the hit of the party?

The "popcorn" cupcakes!

Yummy,yummy,yummy.. and soooo adorable.

There are a million tutorials out there, but if you want one..let me know!

These are easy,easy,easy...but take awhile.

I made 3 dozen and it took over 2 hours..

Well worth the time, but just plan accordingly.

Yesterday I finally competed in my first triathlon. I missed one about a month ago because Baby developed a dreadful stomach bug. Subsequently, I have not been able to train this past month either - too busy with family and work. Honestly I was a little afraid how I would do. I told myself that I was not in it to win it, rather just to finish it. I reminded myself that even if I came in last, I was way ahead of where I used to be.

And I won! You'll never guess who I beat!! I beat that whiny voice in my head that wanted to sleep in, that wanted to slow down, that wanted to quit. Now I didn't win the *whole* triathlon, I came pretty much in the middle at 1:48.

My body is still pretty tired this morning and a bit sore, but I'm so happy I did it. It was an amazing experience. I plan doing 1-2 each summer and I can't wait for the next one. My true nature is starting to rear its head and I'm already hoping to cut my time down by 20 minutes, but in the end just getting your butt out there is accomplishment enough.

For those of you not super interested in my athletic activities, this was the last one for the season. Well unless I can pull it together and do the Halloween 1/2 marathon.

I hope you are inspired to test your body. You are stronger than you know. Go surprise yourself!

Tats, Bloggers, and Cheesecake

One of my favorite Etsy stores, Rae Gun, posted about a blogger party being hosted by Crafty Cupcake & Tootsie Wootsie at the Cheesecake Factory. How fun does that sound? Even though this is the evening before my Tri, I wanted to go. I spent time doing my hair just right and picking out a cute outfit... And before I went to the party, I registered for my Tri..and was subsequently tatted up. In very large pretty stamps, my reg number was imprinted up and down both bare arms..

Right... So I went to the blogger party tatted up. The waiter was super impressed by my street cred and I was asked by several attendees what the importance of "112" was. Oh well, instead of chic quilt designer, I looked more like gansta blogger ..

But what a fun, cute party it was!

And here are the hosts.. Aren't they adorable? They worked so hard to make sure everyone (and there was TONS of ladies) had a good time. Lots of prizes (I won a super cute Halloween subway art piece...pics soon), yummy food, and fun networking.

I didn't partake in the cheesecake.. With the Tri tomorrow, I instead loaded up protein and carbs. I won't say which blogger enjoyed this delicious cheesecake..but doesn't it look amazing??
Met some fabulous ladies! I was excited to meet Amy from Naptime Crafters. Did you know she sells patterns too? She has the most adorable pattern for western boots!

Spent time chatting with the lovely Camilla from First Lady of the House. I think I may have talked her into sewing! I am loving her fall wreath.. and such beautiful pics of it on the blog!

And I probably scared Meagan & Kristi of Meags & Me. I get super excited when I meet other quilt designers. Love to talk about quilting, designing, and sharing ideas. They have some adorable designs!

It is way past my bedtime. The Tri is literally in a couple hours.. Wish me luck!

WIPS for This Week

Can you believe Halloween is just weeks away? I'm so excited! It is one of my favorite holidays - some may argue it is my very favorite! I love to decorate, make costumes, and eat lots of pumpkin goodies. A Starbuck's pumpkin spice latte can fix many wrongs!

I have 2 Halloween mug rug classes going on in October. Here is a sneak peek at the one I'll be doing over at Thimbles & Threads in Draper, UT. The class is only $15 and I'll teach you everything you need to know about paper piece foundation quilting. I'm going to have to make a couple more of these myself - Isabelle is wildy fascinated by this "witchy house".
What else is on my plate? Well one of my favorite Twitter pals, revealed her project for Feeling Stitchy's September motif and I just about died from the cuteness. I of course HAD to get in on the action. Now, I'm not against hand embroidery.. I actually quite like it, but I'm just not *feeling* it these days. As many of you know, I'm *all* about the free motion sketching. So here is my take on it...
It's just a work in progress. I'm hoping the girls will let me finish before the end of September. I made the major outlines in chocolate brown and am going back and "coloring in". I love the sketch look to it - do you?

Wonder Woman Ride

The day after I returned from The Creative Connection Event, I had my Wonder Woman ride with some awesome friends. (I'm the one on the far left if you couldn't tell)

There we are before our 30 mile race in Payson, Utah. It was a beautiful ride! Lots of chatting and catching up, but we all finished in just about 2 hours.

I love bike riding. It is the closest I feel to flying. I love how it clears my head and makes my body feel alive.

But I have to say if I'm Wonder Woman, my amazing husband is Superman! He watched our girls from Wed -Fri..then all day Saturday during my ride.. And when I came home from the race, I passed out from 8pm -8am. He is amazing.. I could not be the person I am without his love and support..

The Creative Connection

As many of you know, this past weekend I attended The Creative Connection in St. Paul. I was picked to pitch a book idea to four publishers and a magazine article to four editors. This truly was a once in a lifetime experience. That's me up there - all ready and sassy. New haircut, new clothes, and tons of hopes...

Now my flight & hotel stay (I did not stay at the Crowne Plaza..big mistake!) was a nightmare. I don't want to bore you, but let me inform you that Murphy's law was well and alive. If you really want to know my sad travel story, I'll tell you over martinis.. yeah, it was that insane.

On to the good stuff!!

After a crazy night and about 5 hours of sleep, I made my way over to TCCE. The Crowne Plaza is gorgeous and such an amazing venue for this event. TCCE was spread over three floors of the hotel - a marketplace (which opened after I traveled home), a complimentary suite to work or relax, and more. You literally could not walk 3 feet without there being a beverage or treat for you.

I arrived early to scope out the scene and geek out out on all the celebrities. A few minutes after embarrassing myself in front of Elisa from Blogher, I met and subsequently attached myself to Julie from ZoZo Bug Baby. What an amazing business woman & mother. I'm truly knocked out by everything she gets done in a day while mothering two little ones. For those that think I do so much in a day, I hand my crown to Julie! I knew of her business well before TCCE and was so excited to get to know her as a person. She is so creative and humble - the kind of person you want to chat with for hours! If you haven't heard of ZoZo Bug Baby, go check it out..like now!

As more women arrived, I was awe struck to see so many established celebrities there to pitch ideas. I met Kass Hall, TomKat Studios, Sharon Sews and more. These ladies are all phenomenal in their field, truly kind spirits, and beyond creative. This was the best part of my day. I love to meet fellow women that have something they want to share with the world. I hope they stay in contact, I would love nothing more than to see their dreams comes to fruition.

My first pitch was for a magazine article. I did not come home with a contract in hand, but I am confident that this is not the end of the conversation so I'm not going to reveal everything.. It was an amazing experience and I will be submitting to magazines much more in the future. My biggest piece advice to you is submit a 99% completed project. They want professional photos and copy ready text. Don't assume that work is done in house - make your proposal as ready to go as possible!

After my first pitch I had a few hours to talk more with my new friends and hear about their pitch experience. I don't think I could have survived the anxiety and excitement of it all without their support. I also had a chance to geek out on Claudine Hellmuth. I can't help myself - I love her work! I luckily had the latest edition of Somerset Holidays in my briefcase (thanks Mom!) and I obnoxiously asked Claudine for an autograph.. I know, I'm an uncouth craft geek. I'm okay with that..

My book pitch was next.. To receive immediate feedback was beyond invaluable. I learned the book's weaknesses and where I need to work on as an artist/author. Was it easy to hear that the book you thought was a slam dunk was not so much..no, not easy, but I learned so much! Again I did not return home with a contract, but I have a new plan of action. I also found out that my previous two submissions to Lark have slipped through the cracks. Advice to you - follow up!

During the roundtable discussions I had a chance to meet with Betz White, Kaari Meng, and Tiffany Threadgould. Yeah.. That's was a mouthful. They provided so much insight, advice, and knowledge about the industry. An amazing opportunity to meet with authors that I have the utmost respect for.

What did I learn from all of this? A lot has happened for me this summer. I've narrowed my focus and the doors have opened with a slight knock. I'm connected to Moda, Riley Blake, AccuQuilt, and more. I was a teeny tiny little fish and I thought I had hit it big. Not so much. I'm just a bit bit bigger. I'm on the right path and it will take more time. And all those big fishes that I see around me - they still have to hunt for the next big thing. In this industry there will never be a time you can rest on your laurels. But is there that chance in any business? Nope. And the rewards for the lifelong pursuit of beauty, creativity, and art just reaps so much rewards for everyone.

Thank you to everyone that helped create The Creative Connection Event! It was amazing. My only regret is that I wasn't able to stay for the full event. I will be there next year and I can not wait!!!

Celebrate Christmas - Quilt Along

Welcome Quilters!

I'm so honored to be a part of Quilting Gallery's Quilt Along.

If you are new to my blog, let me give me a little background.

My name is Jennifer and I live in Utah with my 2 adorable little girls

and super supportive, handsome hubby.

I've been sewing on and off for two decades, and quilting in the more recent years.

Earlier this year I tried paper piece foundation quilting and fell in love.

I'm completely hooked on the technique and started creating my own patterns this summer.

I like to post free patterns & tutorials weekly - I highly recommend subscribing to my blog to keep up with latest!

For this Christmas quilt along, I created the paper pieced block "Santa's Mittens". If you have not done this technique before, I have a very simple tutorial here. If you have any trouble at all, please do not hesitate to email me!!

The block pattern is here. There are a total of 3 PDF pages to print - each one is a 6" printed square. ** With paper piecing you will use your add 1/4" ruler around the edge so it will be a 6.5" square upon completion.

I suggest printing out multiple copies - one to sew on and one to color in as a reference. Please remember that your block will be the mirror image of what you print.

How much fabric do you need?

I used 4 fat quarters and had LOTS leftover.

The wonderful thing about paper piecing is it's easy to use up your stash rather than having to buy new fabric, but I of course always want to buy new fabric.. I'm sure none of you can relate.. ;o)

How do you create the block?

You will do a single block of each mitten.

You will do two blocks of the 4 square. I alternated the colors in my triangles, but of course you can do what you like best.

For this block - you will need to cut the letter groups from each other - A,B,C,D,E, and F.

Complete each letter group and then sew together.

For example, sew A1 to A2, B1 to B2, and then the A group to the B group.

When you paper piece, you will leave a 1/4" border around the printed piece. Thus your printed 6" square will be a completed 6.5" square.

You will then sew the four blocks together and have a completed 12.5" square that will be 12" finished once you sew them to the additional Christmas blocks.

I thank you so much for your time and truly hope you love this block. I know that foundation piecing maybe new to some of you, but please give it a try. I personally find it much easier and I think you will have fun. Happy Holidays!

Adventures in Dyeing

I have been wanting to do a paper pieced project with velvet for awhile now. One of the great things about that technique is you can use fabrics other than cotton since the paper gives you so much stability. I really wanted some uniquely orange dyed velvet, but wow can I tell you that is a way under filled niche. The few pieces I found were priced way beyond their value. I was pretty sure that you could not dye polyester fabric and looked into ready-to-dye velvet online. Again the price was pretty high and I have trouble waiting - patience is not my strong suit.

I was beyond thrilled when I found that Jacquard has an easy peasy way to dye nylon & polyester fabric!! They sell these packets of dye that you simply toss in a metal pot with your fabric. Here is what I did...

Here is my 100% polyester velvet panne from the local fabric chain & 1 iDye packet in Orange.

Find a metal pot that you can easily fit your fabric into.

This pot will now be your crafty pot - no more pasta in here please!!

Toss your fabric into the pot and enough water so that the fabric can swish around easily.

Toss the whole packet in - it all dissolves!

I swished it about with some chopsticks.

Turn the heat up on the stove and simmer it for about an hour.

Here it is simmering..

After an hour, I carefully placed my fabric out on the grass to dry a bit before the rinse.

Now the dye is intended for man made fabrics, but I wanted to dye

some lace and thought I'd dunk it in the pot while it cooled down outside.

Here is my delicious velvet panne after a rinse with some baby detergent!

Isn't it wonderful??

I can't wait to do some fall quilting with it.

And here is that bit of lace I dunked.

I love that it is not solid and there is only a hint of orange -

it is exactly what I was hoping to achieve!

This was so easy and I was amazed by how well the dye worked on 100% polyester! Initially I wanted to do more resist options with the velvet and I couldn't figure out how with a dye packet. If you have experience with this - I would love to hear how you did it! I personally didn't have tons of time (I did this during Baby & Kiddo's nap) and I didn't want to mess with harmful chemicals either.. so it was perfect. I may try altering the color a bit with fabric paints before I quilt it.

Bountiful Baskets

A couple weeks ago I shook things up at home - clean eating..only! A friend suggested it and I haven't looked back. If you Google it, you'll find lots of blogs and books about it. Basically it's taking out everything processed and chemically charged. We eat tons of fruits, veggies, lean meat, whole grains, and some dairy. Since most food at the grocery stores is not clean, I cook almost every meal from scratch. While I'm not fond of the increased dish washing, we have already reaped big health benefits in as little as 3 weeks. I can't encourage this way of eating enough.

However, it does cost money. I try to have most of what comes in our home organic, but we simply can't afford to have it ALL organic. It's a huge bummer that healthy foods cost more than processed junk, but that's the truth.

In an effort to save money and keep on with our healthy ways, I tried a co-op group this calledBountiful Baskets. They have all kinds of fruits, veggies, breads, and more you can order. Now you don't get to choose what type of fruits & veggies - it's whatever is in season.

This week I bought 2 baskets & 1 Mexican option. It was a TON of food, but we go through produce so quickly now. I think I'll probably do 1 basket & 1 Mexi one week and 2 baskets & 1 Mexi the next. I'm also planning on freezing whatever I can mid-week.

Paper Piecing Tutorial

Today we are going to make a very easy peasy heart mini block. You can make this into a little pillow, mini quilt, potholder..and the list goes on!

What do you need?

*scrap fabric

*copy paper - for your printed pattern

*old credit card or something of that shape & weight

*rotary cutter

*cutting mat

*extra fine seam ripper

*tape

*iron

* add a 1/4" ruler

*tweezers

*glue stick

How do you do it?

1.) Print out this pattern - you can download it here. Keep in mind that your finished project will be a mirror image of your pattern. Now because this is an easy pattern, all the piecing will be done on the same page. With more complex patterns, you would have to cut apart main sections to complete and then sew together.

2.)In paper piecing we work in numerical order, so the first section we will do is #1. Pick a scrap piece of fabric that is at least 1/2" wider then section #1. Place the printed side of the paper down on the table. Add a dab of glue stick to the wrong side of the fabric and adhere right side up on the back of the paper - centered into section #1. It helps to hold it up against the light to make sure you have placed it correctly.

3.)Now before we begin sewing, decrease your stitch length somewhere between 1-2. This shorter stitch will make it much easier for you to tear the paper off later. You will not be removing paper until the very end.

4.) With the printed side of the paper facing up, fold back the line between #1 and #2. Using your add a 1/4" ruler, trim the seam allowance to 1/4". You can discard the excess fabric or save for another project. Unfold the pattern.

5.)We will always be sewing on the front side of the paper and laying fabric down on the back. Now find a fabric scrap that fits at least a 1/2" larger than section #2. Place this fabric down on section #1, right sides together with raw edges matching up. Hold or pin in place and turn the paper back over with printed side facing up. You will now stitch right on the line between section #1 and #2.

6.) Gently press the fabric open with an iron.

7.) Repeat step #4 for the section 2 borders. Find a suitable piece of fabric for section #3 -remember that your fabric can be scraps, but they must be 1/2" larger than the printed area. This is the most common step people have trouble with because they use too small a piece of fabric. It is much easier to cut away excess that to start over or to rip the itty bitty stitches..

8.) Place the #3 fabric right side down on section 1&2 - rights sides together with raw edges lined up. Again making sure that when fabric is folded back over it will completely cover the #3 section with room to spare. Hold or pin in place and flip over to the printed paper side. Sew on the #3 / #1&#2 border. Press fabric open.

9.) Now repeat those steps for the remaining sections...More pressing...
More cutting..
TADA! All done - whew! That was easy, right? Now you can gently remove the paper from the back. Use your tweezers to help remove small pieces in the stitches. Your project is now reading for finishing. I think this would be an adorable little sachet pillow.

Back to School!

Is it just me or were we totally gypped of summer this year? Well at least in Utah it took forever to be done with the snow and now it's already time for school. I'm so excited for Isabelle; this is her first year of preschool. She has a wonderful teacher, her best friend in her class, and so much eagerness to learn.

I've searched high & low for some traditions that we could start. My husband doesn't quite get the importance of this, but for me it's those extra touches that I hope my girls will remember and do for their children. I personally remember the very important first day of school pictures, picking out a new backpack, and wrapping my new books with paper grocery bags - what great canvases for drawing!

This year Isabelle is going on a "Backpack Date" with Daddy. As I type, they are at Toys R Us picking out whatever her heart desires. I know she wants The Little Mermaid, but I wouldn't be surprised if she came home with an Iron Man one! ((Just found out she has a Dora backpack and Disney Princess lunch pail!))

Here is my little academic star in a tee I embroidered for her. I think she looks so sweet! The embroidery is from SWAK. I've bought a few files from them in the past and I'm always super happy with the stitch out. Machine embroidery on knit can be interesting to say the least, but I had no trouble with this - thank goodness!

I also made her a bulletin board for all her important papers and artwork. Do you want to see what I did? It's super easy and fun for the kiddos!

What do you need?

*Magnetic board ( I got mine from Target on clearance)

*Enough fabric to cover the board

*Pretty trim for border of board

*Apple applique file from SWAK

*white felt

*tear away stabilizer

*scrap fabric

*magnet

*hot glue

What do you do?

1.) Hot glue fabric down on magnet board only on border. Stretch it tight so it fits nice and smooth.

2. Cut any excess fabric off from the sides. Beautify that border up by hot gluing trim around the edge.
3. Stitch out your apple applique on white felt.
4. Cut apple out from felt, leaving about 1/4" border.
5. Hot glue apple applique on to a magnet.
6. Enjoy!

Defeat or Glory

My wetsuit is ready to be shipped.

My campsite is cancelled.

I've accepted hours to work Saturday afternoon.

I am not doing my first open water Triathlon this Saturday.

The Baby has some kind of awful stomach bug.

The kind of bug that you don't want me to blog about.

And Hubby has been working nights.

I think I could could count the number of hours I've slept on one hand.

There is no way I'm dragging us on a camping trip to do a Triathlon.

It would be miserable and dangerous for me.

It's been hard to let this go. I feel like I've failed. I hate sucking up a $200 loss with no glory picture.

I am not a silver lining kind of gal. I leave that to my Bestie and Mom.

But there is one...

I am stronger now.

I am leaner now.

I am faster now.

I am eating clean now... and so is my family.

I am motivated now.

I am healthy now.

Would I be any of those had I not been working my butt off to compete?

Without a doubt.. nope.

There are a lot of reasons why I jumped on the healthy path,

but one of the biggest is to be role model for my girls.

And I will do that this weekend by letting go of something that is important to me,

for something is that is more.. the health and happiness of my girls.

Granny Baby Blanket

I am soo loving this baby blanket! I will be doing a class on this at Kamille's later this fall. I think it will be so wonderful for the little fall baby in your life. It is made with a superwash merino wool - it is soft, yummy, and washable!

The class will be perfect for the crochet beginner to the advanced. There are only a couple stitches you will use - after this blanket you will have the double crochet (dc) stitch down to an art!

The Not So Spooky Doll Quilt

A couple weeks ago, cutie pie Isabelle was putting her dolly to sleep using one of our kitchen towels. I know! How could she not have a slew of handmade doll quilts? Well to cut me some slack, it's really been only in the last month that she has really shown much interest in her dolls and imaginary play.

The same week, the amazing Rhonna Farrer had a Design Team call. She makes the most amazing digital artwork. Most people I know use her designs for their digital scrapbooks or print them out for cards and other paper projects. I really wanted to find some ways to incorporate her work into some fun sewing projects.

It is really easy! There are a number of ways you can print on fabric, but I wanted some immediate gratification so I went one of the easier ways. I uploaded her images into Photoshop and rearranged them to maximize the number of images on a letter sized paper. Then I printed it on ink-jet printable fabric - you can find these at most craft stores, they are sold near the fabric section.

After the images were printed and heat set (follow the directions on the package for your particular brand), I cut them out and arranged them on a piece of muslin fabric. Once I was happy with the layout, I rubbed a small bit of glue stick behind each circle and adhered it to the quilt. The rest was pretty traditional quilting. Lots of obvious black free motion stitching and bright, contrast binding. I mixed in small postage size pieces of scrap fabric.

I love it! Isabelle was whopping and hollering the whole time I made it. I was informed that it is "just a little spooky" - perfect for her. I can't wait to give to her to play with at Halloween. And I am much happier that her dolls will now have their first proper quilt!

If you love the look of this but don't have any ankle biters with dolls, it would be a perfect accent for a Halloween mantle display or hung up as a mini quilt.

If you have no desire to quilt, you can use this same technique and make into a card or scrapbook layout. Simply print the images on paper and use a black sharpie to make the thread lines.

This year my mom & I finally went to Quilt Market. It was such an amazing experience, I had no idea how many celebrities I would meet. While we were there, I fawned all over the "Quilting Arts" booth. I loooove their magazine and special editions. And I met Pokey! She was so warm and personable. I ended up filming with them a little bit about my adoration for art quilting. I think it was that exchange that finally pushed me to submit to their magazine.

This morning I submitted my quilt, "Ode to the Commode". The magazine opened a call for submissions about pet peeves. And well mine is having to go potty and only finding a cardboard roll where there should be some toilet paper..

Fingers crossed Pokey will find this as amusing as we do. Even though Thomas was the joke in this quilt, he loves it and wants to display it prominently in one of our bathrooms. Maybe it will serve as a reminder? One can only hope...

Gifts of love

I know, I know..it's still quiet here.. Sorry! There is soo much going on behind the scenes and all the while I'm training like crazy for my first triathlon at the end of August. Someone in my Facebook fitness group posted this picture, I love it!

In the meantime, I've been working on handmade gifts for my mom. Gifts for her to touch to remember that she is so very loved and has a huge cheering squad. Can't wait for her surgery to be over and for her to back on her feet. I miss my partner in crime.

Here is her prayer shawl. It was much heavier than I anticipated, but those hospitals can be so cold sometimes.

Mothers & Daughters

I don't know what it is like to be a father obviously, nor do I have a son. I could however write pages on the complex relationship between a mother & daughter. I can tell you that the pull I have to my mother is so similar to the one I have to my daughters. When any of them are in distress it is hard to think of much else. It's hard for me to discuss what this month has been like. However, I am confident now while this health misfortune is so supremely unfair, it is something my mother will conquer and move on from.

While I will not be there for her surgery, I will be able to visit for awhile doing her recovery. In the meantime I am busy working on a few items that will cheer her during the hospital stay. Is there anything you have made for someone undergoing surgery? So far on my hook, I'm working on a prayer shawl. I'm also planning on doing an embroidered prayer cloth. I would love more ideas though, so please let me know!

Needless to say, I didn't do much craftiness or art in the past month. I did work on a few photography props for a friend. It was that return to my knitting needles and crochet hook that I found some peace. It is amazing how therapeutic that craft is and I was surprised by how much I had missed it.

I'm busy working on a large Etsy order,but by tomorrow I will be back in the studio working on some yummy things to show you. Time to get going on Halloween - the months fly by sooo fast!

I also found peace and hope in pushing my physical activity. I'm signed up for 2 triathlons and a number of cycling & running events this summer. For some reason the sensation of physically getting stronger has helped me feel like I can help my mom in her fight. It doesn't make sense, but it is a way for me to harness my energy. It is so hard to watch on the sidelines while someone you love battles a disease.

Letter to the Editor

Thank you everyone for your patience and kind words. We are pulling it back together and each day feels a little more normal. I have lots to say about what is going on, but as I mentioned.. it's not my story..so here's a letter from my mom to me that she has given me permission to publish.

Dear Jenny,

This morning, as usual, I walked downstairs in a sleepy fog to make coffee, and then headed to my laptop to check e-mails and my favorite blogs. I know you’ve put your blog on hold, but I miss it so much, for so many reasons. I still check to see if you’re back. I don’t know if it’s guilt or just sadness that I’m feeling because I’m the reason you’ve put so much of your life on hold.

Looking back over the past 4 months, I’ve been on a long, complicated and difficult journey. I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my entire life, how could I be diagnosed with lung cancer? Now I understand I have a rare type that occurs primarily in non-smoking women. Not only is my life in an altered state, but sadly, so are those of my loving family and friends. It is all so new and unexpected and I think we’re all struggling to regain some sense of normal.

These days, I think of Grandma, and how she continued to knit and cross stitch even as her health deteriorated. She encouraged me, as I encouraged you and so we both started crafting with our hands at a very early age. I think crafting is a huge part of our “normal.” It can be a kind of meditation and therapy and very comforting. It is difficult to just sit and rest without something in my hands.

Now we have a surgery date and there is every reason to be hopeful that my health will return. I hope that soon you will feel more like yourself and ready to restart your blog. Even though we talk on the phone almost every day, you know there isn’t always time to talk about crafting. Isabelle can’t wait to talk to Grandma, and we run out of time. “All things Belle” gave me a chance to see your latest project and see a new picture of my beautiful granddaughters. I miss it, I miss you, I miss Isabelle and Julie…I miss normal!

Jenny, thank you for being my strength, my rock, my beautiful daughter. How could I make it without you? You are always there for me and always will be. God truly blessed me with you. Please know I am feeling stronger and more positive every day and I know that all will be well. I hope that soon you will feel like creating something beautiful and new and you will feel a sense of peace and wellness.

Are you sick of that iconic image? It seems I can't escape it and all its many variations. And now it could well be my motto for the foreseeable future.

I'm not going be cryptic for fun, it's just not my story to tell.

This past week my life has changed. I have faith it will change back. For now though, everything extraneous in my life is on hold. I hope to return to the blog, but my family comes first. And right now my family is in some SOS..

I thank you for reading, commenting, and hopefully finding some joy here.

As Arnold says, I will be back.

Till then send some positive vibes, say a prayer, raise your glass.. do whatever you can do..

A Little This and That

I apologize for the lack of posts these past 2 weeks, there has been so much going on here at home. It literally took me a week to recover from our overnight camping trip with the girls. Anyone have tips to camping with a baby and toddler, AND not coming home completely wiped out? I'd love some ideas!

Summer is here and our days have been filled with early mornings, running through sprinklers, learning the art of a water balloon fight, and evenings on the deck. Unfortunately it hasn't left too much time for blogging or working in the studio. But with beautiful, sweet babies like these who can complain?

I did finish two items last week for my Etsy shop. First up is a Diva Minnie Mouse inspired quilted baby blanket. I am a stickler about copyright - there are no licensed Disney fabrics in this quilt. They are just fabrics that remind me of the iconic fashionable Mouse! Lots of pink, black, polka dots, and zebra stripes. So much fun!

And I had been working on a paper pieced Union Jack for awhile now. I always test on my patterns to make sure they will come out as well I as imagined. I reworked the pattern 3 times and considered scrapping it all together, but I just love the iconic image. I realized my mistake - I was trying to replicate rather than trying to create my own version. As soon as I went wonky and embraced my vision, it was perfect! The pattern is for 4"x6" and it makes a fabulous applique! I'm using my test pattern on a mini art quilt, but I think this would be so cute on a bib or burp cloth!

I'm also working on a couple larger art pieces. It is hard for me to stay focused on the lengthier projects since I'm all about immediate gratification. These new pieces have been floating in my head for awhile though, so I'm excited to work on them and don't want to rush it.

Due to our crazy,crazy summer schedule I'm going to put off doing more sewing pattern reviews & knock off tutorials till at least the end of July. I have lots of fun projects lined up for you, but time is moving so fast. In the meantime, if you do have any requests - please let me know!

First Pattern For Sale & Free Tutorial

I'm going to be listing the Patriotic Pennants - paper pieced pattern is for sale . I'm very excited to be starting this new adventure. I have so many ideas and lots of designs to share. If you ever have any questions or design suggestions, please let me know!

Prim Patriotic Banner

You will need

- an odd number of completed paper pieced pennants from the pattern

- a couple yards of 2" wide coordinating ribbon or fabric

- burlap scraps larger than your completed pennants

1.) If you have not already done so, carefully remove the paper

foundation from the back of the pennants.

2.) Trim pennants down to exact size -

you will not need the 1/4" seam allowance for this project.

3.) Pin a pennant on to a piece of scrap burlap -

make sure you have at least 1/2" border of burlap on all sides.

4.) Sew pennant to burlap, stitching with 1/4" seam allowance.

5.) Trim burlap giving the pennant about 1/2" border.

6.) You can either run your ribbon/fabric string

through your ruffler foot at level 12

or run a long basting stitch down the center and hand gather.

7.) Arrange pennants on ruffled ribbon/fabric and pin in place.

Stitch in place.

That's it! Super easy and such a great prim touch for the holidays.

I can not say enough good things about Little Red! I didn't train as much as I wanted to and I only recently bought my bike, but I did awesome. I wasn't first, but I wasn't last. The race route is beyond beautiful. Isabelle was pretty heartbroken she couldn't ride with me, and there were so many times on my ride I wished my family was there to see some animal or enjoy the scenery. My only regret is that I didn't choose a longer race. There is always next year and I'm researching more events this summer/ fall.

The first week of July, I'm doing the Dirty Girl Run with a good friend. Isabelle is pretty tickled over the idea of watching mom run in mud :P

Those are the cutest cheerleaders anyone could ask for! And my dear, supportive husband had a bouquet of flowers and kiss waiting for me at the finish line. I know.. I'm a lucky one!

I know I've been more quiet than usual, but I do have some fun things to share!

In my Etsy store, I'm going to be starting a line of free motion softies! These are perfect to adorn your home or as safe, soft toys for children.

And I'm super excited to say I'm going to be offering a pattern line on Etsy too. This paper pieced banner is going to be the first! It will be posted later this week.

We all love freebies and mug rugs! I'll be posting the pattern for this fun mug rug. It's a perfect gift for the 4th of July hostess or for yourself. Just the right size for a mug & doughnut.

I want to thank everyone that has donated money for Little Red Riding Hood. I have my bike race this Saturday. Not sure that I'm ready, but riding by so many other awesome women will be all the incentive I need. I made this riding apron in about 10 minutes with a half tea towel, ribbon, and some free motion fun!

Made a few outfits this week while testing patterns for designers. This cutie pie top is available at the Tie Dye Diva! I love how it can be made into a dress or top.

And last but not least, Isa & I went to visit Thomas the Train with some of our most favorite people! We had a blast..

Sewing Pattern Review - Pockets to Go

I apologize for the lack of a complete sewing pattern review this Sunday. My mother made me one of these "Pockets to Go" by Atkinson Designs for Mother's Day (chock full of sewing goodies including this pattern) She had suggested I make one for a pattern review...

Well... I've been working on it all week when the girls would give me a minute. And well it has been a longer project that I had anticipated. I remember planning on doing it in an evening and my Mum was shocked & informed it would take longer. Longer, indeed!

I will bring you the full pattern review next Sunday.. Let's just say it is an adorable basket, but this pattern would be best suited for a class project rather than going solo at home.

An adorable baby bonnet review is on the horizon as well! Have a pattern suggestion? Please let me know!

I had just decided to stop doing the photography props and direct all my efforts into my artistic endeavors, but I figured that story could be just as interesting. When I saw that UCreate's "Create With Me" project this month was a framed chicken wire jewelry center, I had a couple ideas. I knew I didn't want to do a jewelry organizer because I have a really nice armoire for that. I finally decided on a framed design center.

I took a large Ikea frame and removed the glass. Then hot glued some panels of cork on to the frame back. Instead of painting the frame, I spray painted the chicken wire a robin egg blue. And then put it all together!

It was cute and functional, but missing a little pizazz.. So I whipped up some fabric rosettes and gathered fabric for an added accent.

It works great! I can either pin fabric and paper ideas to the cork or clasp them on to the chicken wire with metal clips.

This baby is going right over my sewing table to inspire me for future projects!

We Remember Moments

When I first started working on this printable today, it had a different meaning. On Facebook a friend of mine mentioned her unhappiness with her pregnant size. I immediately wanted to comment something to effect of that she should enjoy it because as soon as the baby was born, she would miss the feeling. But then I remembered how I would have felt if someone had told me that during any of my pregnancies.

Before I had kids I cried inside each time I saw a pregnant woman. I desperately wanted to have a baby. I wanted to have that baby bump. I wanted to feel the secret kicks and have inexplicable cravings in the middle of the night. It took me years to get pregnant with Isabelle. I remember the feeling of elation as soon as I saw that pink plus sign. And then the pregnancy got complicated. Honestly, the reality of my pregnancies were not easy. I was always very sick, on daily injections for blood clotting issues, and felt guilty about not loving my pregnancy. But, if you asked me how I remember my pregnancies I would tell you about how both girls kicked like crazy when they heard Thomas talk, about my deep love for hot & sour soup, and the maternity clothes I sewed. We remember moments.

The first quote I typed was, "Real Women Have Curves". The point being that having a round pregnant belly is a beautiful expression of being a woman. It took me about a second to look at my graphic and recoil. I instantly remembered the pangs of infertility and my pregnancy loss before Juliette. No, being a "real" woman was more than carrying a child. And so I searched for something else.

As I pondered what would be an appropriate quote and I found this "moments" one, I was still a bit tender from remembering my pregnancy loss almost 2 years ago. And it occurred to me that even though I suffered a loss, I still have that moment when I first found out I was pregnant. I was in my brother's home in Tucson. I was ecstatic. I was over the moon. I called Thomas at work to tell him Isabelle was going to be a big sister. And it didn't work out, but I still have those moments in my heart.

I hope this printable touches you.

Anthro Knock Off - Tea & Crumpets Apron

Are you ready? I've been talking for weeks about making a knock off tutorial of Anthro's Tea & Crumpets apron. First I got waylaid by Quilt Market (can you blame a girl?!) and now my kiddos are pretty sure that it is absolutely hilarious to not nap nor sleep longer than 2 hours at a time at night.. Did I mention my hubby is back on nights? Let's just say I'm holding to my sanity with white knuckles..

Without further ado.. here is what I'm calling my Martini and Olive Apron 'cause it's just been that kind of week.. And this apron is SO stylish it makes me want to have a cocktail party!

What do you need?

* Yellow fabric- 20"x27", 4"x17", and (2) 4"x36" pieces

* White fabric - 4"x52", 13"x30", (3) 3"x36", and (2) 4"x36"

* 2 packages of single fold bias in light grey

How long do you need?

Around 2 hours. This is a little time consuming with all the ruffles, but what it takes in time it gives back generously in style! However, if you don't like to sew (faints!) or don't know how, Anthro's price tag of $32.00 is very reasonable.. But you love to sew and you want to make it yourself,right? Right!

What do you do?

Grab your large yellow piece 20"x27". On the two 20" sides and one long 27"side, fold up 1/4" and press. Do it one more time to cover those raw edges and sew close to the fold.

Increase your stitch length and baste the remaining 27" long side. Gently gather and set aside.

Take your piece of white fabric that measures 4"x52". This is going to be the white ruffle on the bottom of the skirt. With wrong sides together, fold it lengthwise and press, so now that it measures 2"x52". I have it doubled up because white fabric is so transparent and I didn't want this apron to look cheap.

Okay, now you have 2 options.

A.) If you have a ruffler foot.

Stitch a scant 1/4" lengthwise along the raw edges and then run through your ruffler on level 6 (6 stitches for every ruffle). I sew the raw edges first because they can slide in your ruffler foot.

B.) If you don't have a ruffler foot.

Set a long stitch length. Sew 1/4" lengthwise along the raw edges. Do it one more time right by the last seam. You will gently gather this by hand. The extra row will decrease your chances of the thread breaking while you gather, but still be gentle!

Lay your ruffles on the long side of the hemmed yellow piece. You want to lay the raw edges of the ruffles on the right side of the long hemmed 27" bottom of apron (not on the gathered edge! that is for your waist ties). Sew these together and press.

Your bottom is done! On to the top...

Grab your white piece that measures 13"x30". This is your bodice. With right sides together, fold it half lengthwise so that now it measures 13"x15". Press.

Serge or sew the two 15" long sides and turn back out to the right side. Set aside.

Now it's time to make those ruffles for the bodice. You will need the (3) pieces of 3"x36". You have two options.

A.) If you have a serger.

Serge all the sides of all 3 pieces.

B.) If you don't have a serger.

You will need to clean up those long edges. Fold up 1/4" on each long side and sew close to the fold.

And now you have another option..

A.) If you have the ruffler foot.

Run the 3 pieces through the ruffler on level 6. You will stitch down the center of the pieces, not on either side.

B.) If you don't have a ruffler foot.

Set a long stitch length. Stitch down the center of the strips. Gently gather.

Pin the 3 ruffles to bodice.

Now it's time to sew the ruffles down. Instead of doing a straight stitch and trying to go over your ruffler stitch (cause I can never do that perfectly), I set it to a small zigzag. This way it looks like there is only 1 decorative stitch down the center of the ruffler, instead of 2 lines.

Time to make our halter ties. I did mine WAY too small, so in the picture it will look smaller than what you make.. Do as I say, not as I did..

Take your (2) 4"x36" white pieces. With right sides together, serge/sew the 2 long sides. On one of the short sides, cut it at 45 degrees and serge/sew. Through the remaining open short side, pull the ties out to the right side. Press.

Pin your ties to the top of the bodice. I pinned mine under both ruffle sides, you can pin yours wherever you like best. Now top stitch all the edges of the bodice, being sure to stitch the halter ties to the bodice.
Whew.. Your almost done! Time to make your apron ties and pull it all together.

With right sides together, pin the bodice bottom to the gathered edge of the apron. Sew/serge together.

Take your 4"x17" of yellow fabric. With wrong sides together, fold in half lengthwise and press so that it now measures 2"x 17". Get your grey bias and fold over both long edges. Sew down the center of grey bias (be sure your yellow fabric is sandwiched in there!) Set aside.

Take your (2) 4"x36" of yellow fabric.With wrong sides together, fold in half lengthwise and press so that it now measures 2"x 36". On one of the short sides, cut it at 45 degrees. Get your grey bias and fold over the 2 long edges & the 45 degree end ( you will be making a long U) Sew down the center of grey bias (be sure your yellow fabric is sandwiched in there!)

Sew the raw edges of the apron ties to one end of the bodice strip. Sew the other apron tie to the other side of the bodice strip.

Pin the bodice strip centered between the bodice and apron. Sew in place.

Grab your dry martini and kick your heels up!

If you quilt or have any interest in it, I highly recommend the website Quilting Gallery. There are so many excellent resources. As soon as I joined, I signed up for the basket swap. My partner had similar taste to me, so it wasn't all the hard to make an adorable bag for her. I hope she loves it! Here are some detail pictures..

The fabric is from Riley Blake. I tucked in a few extra fat quarters for her..
Lots of free motion quilting in the main blue areas. I tried my hand at meandering daisy. It doesn't show up too much in the pictures, but it is really sweet.

Can't wait for my next swap!

Sunday Sewing Pattern Reviews - Easy Peeping Owl (Paper Piece Quilting)

Recently on a lot of my favorite quilting blogs I had read about paper piecing. In particular there was this phenomenal flying geese design that I fell in love with. Then on Flickr there was this apron quilt that was amazing! I couldn't see where they had appliqued them on. When I inquired about the technique, I found out they had been paper pieced. What was this?? I knew of using freezer paper to help with applique, but that wasn't it.

After some more digging around on the web, I found out that paper piecing is basically sewing a quilt top together using paper as a foundation. What is the advantage in this? Perfect points, no precise measuring, you can use scraps, and you can make itty bitty designs with a minimal amount of cursing. I myself love quilting and *hate* piecing. I'm not a type A personality so my points aren't perfect, but my OCD kicks in later and it bugs me that it's off. I've generally tried to avoid real fiddly piecing... until now! If you are like me, I beg of you to try this technique - it can really change your mind! (P.S. if you are attending my sewing night in June, I will be demonstrating the basics)

I quickly found Sonja's website, Artisania, and fell in love with the Peeping Owl. Well, actually I probably love the Halloween set most of all!

Description of pattern:

This 4 page PDF e-pattern comes complete with full instructions, and an extra flipped version of the pattern so you can create a whole forest of Peeping Owls!

She doubles as a Halloween pattern too! Ah, that’s the magic of fabric eh?

Level of Difficulty:

This is the easier of the two owl patterns, but Sonja rates this 2 out of 4 for difficulty. If you have tried the piecing technique before, you should be able to do this without any hiccups. The only tricky part will be matching up the seams of the major pieces.

This was my very first time at trying this technique and I only made 2 minor errors.

Fabric recommendations:

I used high quality cotton for my block. However, one of the big advantages with paper piecing is you absolutely can use *any* type of fabric. The paper provides the foundation, so you can use slippery or stretchy fabric without fear. I am eager to try another style of block with silk.

This is also a great way to stash bust; for this block I went through my scrap bins and picked out colors I liked. No need to buy extra fabric - hooray!

Overall Design:

I love it! I love modern quilting and owls, so this was perfect. Sonja has made this block as easy as possible, but has not cut out the style of it. With some easy fabric color changes, you can make this into a great Halloween addition too. The block size makes it a great base to make a pillow, quilt, or maybe even an accessory like a backpack.

Instructions:

Very clear, no grammatical or construction errors, and great diagrams.

This pattern does not contain instructions on how to paper piece, but Sonja does offer free patterns and beginning basics on her site.

Modifications and Tips:

I did some research while making this block and found there a couple ways to paper piece. Sonja's method is based off cutting the pieces into their shape before sewing. This way didn't work best for me. I bought a 1/4" ruler and would cut my shapes down after sewing the seam. I also bought Alex Anderson's book about paper piecing. Absolutely neither of these are required to do the pattern and Sonja's instructions are fabulous, but keep in mind that we all think differently - there is no "one" way. Try a few different methods of paper piecing and I'm sure you'll find one that is a good fit.

Conclusion:

If you want to quilt but don't like piecing, you have to try this! If you are a quilting piecing phenomenon, you should have this technique in your back pocket. I really can't think of anyone that wouldn't enjoy this and as a quilter should really know how to do this.

Sonja's patterns are fresh, modern, and very accessible to every stage of quilter. I love my little owl and can't wait to make something fun with him.

Mother's Day Gift

I've been wanting to reveal my Mother's Day gift that I made. I love it so much and was so happy to see my Mum loved it too!

Of course, back to my love of free motion art..

When I think of my Mom, I think of classic colors - red, black, and white.

Timeless and classy..
I can't wait to see this in my Mum's home!

I do have to admit that is not my lovely idea.. it was Jenny Doh's. You must go see her original piece. I loved it the second I saw it and knew immediately that I wanted to make my own version for my Mum.

It is funny that I when I got really into free motion art that I thought I was being original, come to find out..not so much =) That ever happen to you? Anyways once I learned that I was not exactly an innovator, I started researching more artists that were interested in this freestyle sewing. That is how I found Jenny Doh. She is zomg amazing. The more I learn about her and see her art pieces, the more I wish I could convince her that she really should move to Utah and be my very best friend. Until then, reading her blog will have to do..
